Which charger should you choose?
| Your situation | Suggested charger | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Independent home with parking | 7.4 kW AC wallbox (Type-2) | Enough for overnight charging for most cars |
| Apartment or housing society | Shared AC chargers with metering and OCPP | Billing per user and society approval |
| Office or hotel | 7.4 kW to 22 kW AC, optional one DC unit | Cars stay parked for hours |
| Mall or city fast-charge point | 30 kW to 60 kW DC (CCS2) | Short visits need faster charging |
| Highway or fleet hub | 60 kW to 120 kW and above DC | High throughput |
Important: your car limits the charging speed
Most current Indian EVs have onboard AC chargers limited to roughly 3.3 kW to 7.4 kW. A 22 kW AC charger will still charge them at their own limit. Likewise, a DC charger cannot exceed your car's maximum DC rate. Always check your car's specifications and its connector (Type-2 for AC, CCS2 for DC).
EV charger buying checklist
- BIS compliance: Ask for certificates showing the model meets the IS 17017 series.
- Connector and power: Confirm Type-2 or CCS2 and the real rated output per gun.
- Smart features: App control, scheduling, load management and energy metering.
- OCPP support (commercial): Lets you use third-party management software and avoid lock-in.
- Warranty and service: Check warranty length and who services your city.
- Installation: Ask what is included: cable, earthing, MCB, civil work and commissioning.
- Electrical capacity: Check your sanctioned load and whether you need a dedicated line or three-phase supply.
- Total cost: Compare hardware, installation, software fees and electricity upgrades, not just the charger price.
Home charger installation: what to know
- Check your sanctioned load before choosing the charger power.
- Use a dedicated circuit with proper earthing and protection.
- Ask your electricity distribution company (DISCOM) whether it offers an EV connection or time-of-day tariff. See EV Charging Cost in India.
- Apartment residents should get written permission from their society or RWA.
- Some carmakers bundle or sell a wallbox with the car, so compare before buying separately.
Starting a charging business? Pick the charger carefully
Business buyers should look at utilisation, uptime, software and service, not just hardware price. Read the EV Charging Franchise guide before you invest, and use the best EV charging apps guide to see how drivers will find your station.

Conclusion
For most homes, a certified 7.4 kW AC wallbox is the smart buy. For businesses, match charger power to how long vehicles stay and compare brands on certification, software and service, not only price. Get at least three itemised quotes before you decide.
