An EV charging station is a site with one or more chargers that supply electricity to recharge electric vehicles. India has 52,718 public EV charging stations according to the latest government data shared in Parliament, including 16,561 fast chargers for cars. But a station on a list is not always a station that works, and every website counts the network differently. This guide explains the real network size, the types of stations, what charging costs, how to find a working station near you, and how to open your own.

How many EV charging stations are there in India?
The latest government data shared in Parliament reports 52,718 public EV charging stations in India, including 16,561 fast chargers for cars. The government has also reported that India has crossed 1 crore registered electric vehicles, so the network is growing alongside demand. That fast-charger figure covers a range of power levels, from about 30 kW to much higher, so it does not mean all of them are ultra-fast. See Ultra-Fast EV Charging Network in India for the high-power picture.
Why different websites show different numbers
If you search around, you will find very different totals. Here is why:
- Different units. Some sources count stations (sites), others count charging points (individual connectors) or chargers (units). One station can have several chargers.
- Different scope. An operator's page counts only its own network, while a government figure covers all public stations.
- Different dates. Some pages still show figures that are years old.
- Different claims. Operators publish their own counts, and the same operator can show different numbers on different pages.
Rule of thumb: use the government figure for the national total, use operator figures only for that operator, and compare numbers only when they use the same definition and a similar date.
Types of EV charging stations
| Type | Power | Typical connector | Approx. time* | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Slow AC | 3.3 kW | Type-2 / portable | 8 to 14 hours | Home overnight, backup |
| Fast AC | 7.4 kW to 22 kW | Type-2 | 4 to 7 hours at 7.4 kW | Homes, offices, hotels, malls |
| DC fast | 30 kW to 60 kW | CCS2 | 30 to 60 minutes (10 to 80%) | City stops, short breaks |
| High-power DC | 60 kW to 150 kW | CCS2 | About 30 minutes | Highways |
| Ultra-fast DC | 150 kW to 350 kW and above | CCS2 | About 15 to 20 minutes if the car supports it | Premium corridors and hubs |
*Rough guide. Real time depends on your battery size, starting charge and your car's maximum charging rate. Your car, not just the charger, sets the speed.

Which connector does your EV use?
| Connector | Used for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Type-2 | AC charging of cars | Common at homes, offices, hotels and malls |
| CCS2 | DC fast charging of cars | Common standard for DC fast chargers in India |
| Two-wheeler connectors | Scooters and bikes | Many two-wheelers use different or proprietary connectors, so check compatibility with the network before you go |
How much does it cost to charge at an EV charging station?
Charging is billed per kWh. As a budgeting guide:
- Home: about ₹6 to ₹9 per kWh, depending on your state and slab.
- Public AC: about ₹10 to ₹18 per kWh.
- Public DC fast: about ₹15 to ₹25 per kWh.
Some stations also add parking or session fees. See the full breakdown and a simple formula in EV Charging Cost in India.
How to find a working EV charging station near you
- Search the TRANDS EV charging station directory for your city or route.
- Check the connector type (Type-2 for AC or CCS2 for DC) and the power rating.
- Open the operator's app to confirm the charger is online and free.
- Read recent user reviews if the app shows them.
- Keep a backup station within your remaining range.
- For highway trips, plan stops around DC fast chargers and carry more than one charging app.
6 signs a charging station is reliable
- The app shows live status and it matches what you see on site.
- Recent reviews mention successful sessions, not just old ones.
- The power rating and connector are clearly listed.
- It is run by a known operator with a support number.
- It is at a staffed, lit location such as a hotel, mall or fuel station.
- There is a nearby backup station if it fails.

How to use an EV charging station: step by step
- Park correctly so the charging cable reaches your car's port.
- Open the operator's app and scan the QR code on the charger, or select it on the map.
- Check the tariff shown in the app.
- Plug in the connector until it clicks.
- Start the session in the app or with an RFID card, and confirm that charging has begun on your car's display.
- Pay using UPI, card or wallet.
- Stop the session in the app, unplug and return the cable neatly.
On DC fast chargers, charging to about 80% is usually the fastest use of time, because speed drops as the battery fills. Move your car when you are done so others can charge.

How to set up an EV charging station in India
EV charging is an unlicensed activity in India, which means you do not need a special licence, but you do need the following:
- A suitable site with good visibility, easy entry and enough power.
- A grid connection from your electricity distribution company (DISCOM) and local approvals.
- Certified chargers that meet Indian BIS standards, with the right connectors and OCPP support for commercial use. See EV Chargers in India.
- Management software and payments through a network or your own platform.
- A business model: own and operate, franchise, or revenue share. Read the EV Charging Franchise guide and the EV Charging Station Business Model guide.
The government has allocated ₹2,000 crore under PM E-DRIVE for public charging infrastructure. Support is aimed mainly at public and government-linked projects, so check the latest scheme before relying on it.
